Ending your membership

How to ask us to close your membership, what happens next, and when it actually ends.

4 min read Created 26 Jul 2026

Overview

You can ask to end your membership yourself. Open My Profile and look for End your membership at the bottom of the page.

It is a request, not a switch. Sending it changes nothing. You stay a member with full access, and you can withdraw it any time before we review it.

Your membership ends only when we approve the request.

If the last date to renew has passed and you did not renew, you owe this year’s fee. We cannot close your membership until that is paid, or the committee cancels it. Leaving is not a way to avoid a fee you already owe.

You pick a reason from a short list. Writing anything more is optional. The list is there so that nobody has to put their circumstances into words in order to leave.

Reference

Reason You must pick one from the list. Writing more is optional.
What sending it does Nothing, yet. You stay Active with full access until we approve it.
Pending Review We have it and have not decided. You can still withdraw it.
Approved Your membership is closed. Portal access ends and we email you a confirmation.
Rejected We said no, and you can read why on the page. Your membership carries on, and you can ask again.
Withdrawn You changed your mind before we reviewed it. Nothing happened.
One at a time You can have one open request. We keep all of them on record, so an old one is still there if you rejoin.
Fee you may owe This year’s renewal fee, if the last date to renew has passed and you did not renew. It is settled or cancelled before we approve.
Cancelling the fee Only the committee can. It is a separate decision from approving your resignation, and we record who made it and why.
Fees already paid Not refunded. See the Cancellation & Refund Policy.
Coming back You are welcome to. It is a new application rather than a renewal.

Step-by-step

  1. Open the page from your profile
My Profile, then End your membership at the bottom. It is there rather than among your details because it starts a process, not an edit.
  2. Read what it says about the fee
If you owe anything, the page tells you how much and for which year. You can still send the request — we will tell you where you stand.
  3. Pick a reason, and add more only if you want to
One choice from the list is required. The box underneath is optional. If there is something we could have done better, it is a good place to say it, and somebody reads them.
  4. Tick the box and send it
The tick is there so nobody sends it thinking their membership ends straight away. After that the page shows Pending Review.
  5. Wait, or change your mind
You keep full access the whole time. Withdraw this request removes it, and nothing is recorded against your membership.
  6. Come back to see the outcome
The same page shows Approved, Rejected or Withdrawn, and anything we wrote. You do not need to email anyone to find out.

Tips

If you are only skipping a year rather than leaving, do not resign. Let your membership run out — you keep your Member ID and history, and you can renew later. Tell us before the last date to renew, though: after it, you owe the year’s fee either way.
Sort out anything you owe before you send the request. It is the one thing that holds up approval.
Download your receipts first if you claim your membership fee on a tax return.

Notes

Your membership stays active until we approve the request. There is no gap.
Everything is recorded — your request, any decision about the fee, and the approval — each with a date and a name.

Troubleshooting

You sent the request and nothing seems to have changed.

Why it happens: That is how it works. Your membership stays active until we approve it.

What to do: Nothing to do. The page shows Pending Review while we have it.

You are told a fee must be settled first.

Why it happens: The last date to renew passed and your membership was not renewed, so this year’s fee is owed.

What to do: Pay it, or ask the committee to cancel it. Once that is resolved we can approve the request.

You want to cancel the request.

Why it happens: You changed your mind.

What to do: Open the page and choose Withdraw this request. It only works before we review it.

We said no and you disagree.

Why it happens: Our reason is on the page.

What to do: Reply to us about it. You can also send a new request once you have.
