Signing in, and what to do when you cannot
The two ways to sign in, how to reset a forgotten password, and why you sometimes have to wait.
Overview
There are two ways to sign in: with your email and a password, or with Google. You use whichever one you set up when you joined.
These are not interchangeable. If you signed up with Google, there is no password. If you signed up with a password, Google will not recognise you.
Nobody here can see your password. We can only send a reset to your email address, or change which address it goes to — and we check who you are before doing that.
Two things can lock you out for a short while, and both look like a fault if you do not expect them. Three wrong passwords locks your account for ten minutes. Trying too many times in one minute blocks your whole internet connection for a minute. Waiting fixes both.
One more thing worth knowing: if your membership has been closed, you can sign in and then be signed straight back out. The sign-in worked; the membership check is what stopped you.
Reference
| Three wrong passwords | Your account is locked for 10 minutes. Nobody needs to unlock it — just wait. |
|---|---|
| Too many tries in a minute | You see Too Many Requests. Wait a minute and try again. This applies to your internet connection, not your account. |
| Reset link | Works once, and only for 30 minutes. Asking for a new one cancels the old one. |
| Staying signed in | About 2 hours. Closing the tab does not sign you out — only Log out does. |
| Google sign-in | You go to Google, then come back. No password is involved. |
| Closed memberships | If your membership was refused, resigned or ended, you are signed out again straight away. |

-
Reset it instead of guessing againUse Forgot your password on the sign-in page and enter your email address. The page says it has sent the email either way, so nobody can use it to find out who is a member.Three wrong guesses locks you out for ten minutes. Resetting is quicker than a fourth try.
